Permalink Reply by Kimberly Wilcox on August 11, 2011 at 7:15pm I'm in the same boat as you. I went to a 2 year community college, and I'm headed off to SUNY Potsdam as a junior at the end of this month. I'm kind of really nervous because I already knew a lot of people at the community college; a lot of my friends from high school ended up going there, and it's a really small school. Some of the classes I was in were smaller than some of the classes I was in in high school! The community college I went to was close to home (only about 20 minutes away) so I lived at home, but Potsdam is about 5 hours away, so I'll be living on campus.
I think even though everything is going to be really different, it'll be ok, adjusting to being at the bigger school. I hope so, anyway.
I'm nervous and scared and everything, but I'm excited too. I really can't wait to be away from home. I've lived in the same town since I was 4, going to the same school since kindergarten.. so it's like I know everyone, and I don't always feel like I can be me here. I feel like I have to be who the people I grew up with expect me to be... I want to get away from everyone I know so I can be more myself... if that makes any sense?
That makes perfect sense! It's like a fresh start for you being away like that..the people don't know you and do not know what to expect so its like they have no predetermined notions of who you'll be. That's the good thing about college, huh? :D Even though it seemed much didnt change at your community college, SUNY definitely seems like the place where you'll be able to mold into the person you truly are.
Yeah I suppose i'll be okay too. I already know about how to handle college courses and all, and it'll be exciting to go to a university! my comm was the same! smaller class sizes, 20-30 in like 99% of them! I think the best part of it all is living that college life. Dorming, cafeteria meals (lets hope they're good!) and just joinin cool clubs and getting into the everyday grove. I hope you have a successful time at your univeristy! :D
Permalink Reply by Kimberly Wilcox on August 12, 2011 at 9:48am Great minds think alike --Pretty much everything you said is EXACTLY what I'm thinking too! :D
I'm normally sooo shy around people until I know them, so I think I'm gonna join a club or 2 so I can meet people with similar interests to mine, and maybe it'll be easier to make friends that way. What about you, are you shy around new people too? How are you planning on dealing with that (if you are)?
And thank you, I hope you'll have a successful time at yours too! :D
Yay! Yeah, I can be shy too, it's a nerve-racking situation meeting new people! But I usually can warm up pretty fast once I realize that they're nice. Yeah it should be easier meeting friends that way, and i'll try to actually leave my dorm so i'm not missing out on meeting some cool people!
I'm just going to try and realize that more people will be friendly when you talk with them than unfriendly, and hopefully that'll help me open up and not be afraid. Hopefully that'll work! I'll also speak up in class as much as a can. I have to take a speech class so I definitely will have to anyways! Haha
:]

Permalink Reply by Kimberly Wilcox on August 12, 2011 at 10:44pm Yeah, it is a fun class :) I'm glad I took it. We had to do 3 impromptu speeches (the teacher gave us the topic when we got to class and gave us 5 minutes to prepare a 2 - 3 minute speech) and 3 longer speeches which were:
- Introductory (we had to introduce ourselves to the class by comparing ourselves to something, and giving 3 reasons why we're like that thing. I ended up comparing myself to a puppy because I'm young, energetic, and playful.)
- Informative (We had to inform the class about something that we thought was interesting. I talked about American Idol and the day I met Sanjaya from season 6 of the show)
- Persuasive (we had to persuade the class to do something. I talked about a charity that I care a lot about and tried to persuade the people in my class to care about it too).
We didn't have to write out our whole speech, but we had to have an outline of it to turn in, that was part of the grade for the speech.
wow, I hope my class is like yours! Those sound fun. The 2-3 minute speeches make me nervous though because it's like 5 minutes to prepare! (gasp).
I remember one I did in HS and we had to pick topics from a box and I got love and I don't even remember what I said except that when I was like "Sometimes you see a guy and you're like 'I want him.'" and everyone was laughing the remainer of my time up there so it was like whew. lol! but yeah I hope I have those kind of subjects like you. Those seem way more straight forward and interesting! Cool you met Sanjaya! Was he nice? I bet you did pretty well in that class, huh? I feel a little less nervous about it now that I have a vague idea of what I might expect. I also used ratemyprof to look up the professors I have this semmy and they've all pretty much have some helpful good reviews. Do you use that?
Permalink Reply by Kimberly Wilcox on August 13, 2011 at 7:42pm ahh I would've HATED it if we just had to pick a random topic to do our speeches on. That's good if you can make the people in your class laugh; that's what made it easier for me. If I could get people to laugh, it made me feel a lot less nervous up in front of them.
I only met him for like 2 seconds lol. But yeah, he was really nice to his fans, it seemed like he cared about us all, you know? It was at a book signing down in New York City, I got his autograph and a picture with him.
I ended up with an A in that class. :)
No, I've never used that site before. I've heard of it though. Is it accurate, do you think? Or do people who didn't like their teachers just say bad things because they didn't like them?
Yeah I'm glad we only did that once! I would have died if I got something crazy that I didn't even know the meaning of. Yeah humor makes things so much easier when you're doing a speech. you know how hard it is to stare at a group of people that have no emotion on their face?! Freaks me out!
Ahh that's nice! I love when famous people are geniunely kind, then you know they're good people. Whoo go you, A :D Well i've not come across any too out-there malicious reviews. Some people that did bad complain and are all he sucks don't take him while for the most part you'll get students that actually outline how the class went, how he grades, and what to expect. I'd say for every teacher i've ever looked up 95% of their reviews actually applied to my time in the class. But it all could depend on the prof! :P
