College Students: What does Osama Bin Laden's Death Mean to You...

Most college students were anywhere from 8 to 12 years old when 9/11 happened.   What does Osama Bin Laden's death mean to you?  Does it have a lot of emotional significance to you or is it not that big of a deal?  Would love to hear your thoughts...

Osama Bin Laden has been a threat to our country for centuries and I believe his death is only a mile stone. I'm a proud military sister, cousin, & best friend. Such as when we captured & killed Saddam Hussein, it was an accomplishment or a mile marker that we didn't have to worry about one man, but these men have many followers. Bin Laden's death comes as a bitter sweet happiness. Many people seem to think Bin Laden is the only reason we're still in Iraq/Afghanistan and other areas, but if they were to have completed any research, they would know that we have had conflict with him for centuries, not just this past one after 9/11. We should cross him off the list, but don't allow ourselves to be comforted by this. I was in they 5th grade when 9/11 happened, but I don't think anything will happen to bring justice to those many families lost and broken in the attacks on 9/11 and those that followed. I don't feel like war will end anytime soon. God bless our soldiers, I pray they all make it back home soon <3
I agree with Heather that Bin Laden's death is definitely a milestone, and the fact that he is gone means that we have one less of these horrible monsters to worry about. In terms of how if affected me, though...I probably saw about a million facebook statuses related to the event before I even got the chance to process it and make up my own mind! It was like an explosion of patriotism; this "ding dong, the witch is dead" medley, without Margaret Hamilton, for once. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but now that I have had the chance to think about it, I am filled with much pride and happiness for my country, and believe we are one step closer to justice being fully served. Although nothing can truly fix what happened to our American people on 9/11, as Heather also mentioned, I believe that this is something that can bring at least some measure of comfort to our hearts. Our country has and will continue to previal.
This was a very interesting experience for me. I'm very torn on the subject. I'm very happy that he can no longer do harm to his country, the countries surrounding, or the USA. However I don't feel its right to celebrate death. I am a Christian and I feel its sad it had to come to death. I understand it was a last resort but I'm sad death was the result. I'm proud of our soldiers and support our troops for being so brave in this and everything they do. I'm glad he can't hurt them anymore and I pray for no retaliation. God bless America!
I was actually quite shocked to hear about it.  I was casually hanging out on Facebook when all the sudden every post was about Osbama Bin Laden's death.  And Facebook is never that repetitive...  I agree that it is a milestone, but it in no way has changed the wars in the Middle East.  We're still over there fighting, and people are still loosing lives.  The only change is that it gives the news something else to over-report about.  As for being happy about it or not, I can say I'm neither happy or sad about it.  I feel it is wrong to celebrate his death, and I'm not even sure I hate him.  I hate what he did to this nation, to his own people at times, and to the reputation of the Muslim religion around the world, but I never met the man.  I can't hate him.  Really, it's nice that we got ahead in a war, but I have to admit I'm a little apathetic myself.  I know it's not the best, but I can't help it.
I celebrated.  I celebrated because this man justified two wars and millions of dollars being spent, not to mention the lives of young men and women.  As the daughter of a veteran, I cheered, but I also realized that the war will never end.  As much I want the men and women to come home, I know they will not.  Bin Laden justified death and when he was killed, I celebrated because he got justice.  I do not like death and I am against the death penalty, but in this case, I made an exception.
It meant drunk frat boys singing the national anthem at 2 a.m., for the most part.
I personally am not sure how I feel about it.. or anything that Obama has 'done' for our country. I use the term done loosely here in his case and for our sake because in all honesty, he did not do the capturing or the killing. Brave American soldiers carried out this task, while he barked the order. As for our wonderful president, wonderful being another term I am expressing as loosely, he has his cake and eats it too in this particular situation simply because he is the president. I feel as if he has not done very much good for our country's people. While I very much agree that it is a pehenomenal accomplishment that Bin Laden is dead (though i would never particularly celebrate any death), I just do not really see how Obama can stand by and take all the credit. I really do think our soldiers are outstandingly brave individuals for literally laying their lives out on the line for us everyday. As an individual, I believe in a more passive aggressive route though. I think this war has been and will be dragging out for much longer than need be. While it can be a nice victory to see Americans conquering the enemy and fighting for what they believe in, I never cease to think to myself how much better off the world would be if instead of getting overly anxious to start a riot over 9/11, maybe we could all just try and make peace and come to an understanding. Sure it resulted in broken families and lit a spark of red, white, and blue blooded American fighting fire, but sometimes I wish there wasn't such a reason to add tinder to the flames.
