The Naked Roommate

I recently got accepted to Oakland University and Alma College, but I can't decide between the two. The university has nearly 20,000 enrolled students, but the college barely has more than my high school's 1600. But this isn't about college size. Alma has been beating down my door with offers on scholarships and even a special event designed to give me even MORE scholarship opportunities! But I really love Oakland, and my mom mentioned something about seeing if Oakland could match (or at least raise) the scholarship opportunities Alma is offering me. It's a difference of $10,000 at the moment. What I wanted to know is if it's okay for me to take my scholarship to the university, show it to them, and ask if they can match it or something like that. Would that work, or would they just tell me to go to Alma instead? I'm not sure, and my mom suggested it (even though she never pursued a typical post-secondary education) so I'm a little skeptical of its success rate.  Would love any help anyone could offer?

I'm not sure what to do about the scholarship issue but I would suggest visiting the campuses again & seeing which one you could TRULY see yourself at. Then decide which one you want to go to. It's all about where you think you will have the best experience. As for the money, $10,000 is a big difference so I would definitely look into Alma as a big contender but if you won't be happy there then the money isn't really worth it, in my opinion.

My main point is don't just settle for the school because it's offering you lots of money. That's definitely a perk, and I understand that money is a huge deciding factor, but choose the school based on you  & whether you could see yourself going there.

(for me it turned out that the school i fell in love with ended up having the best financial aid package as well....but even with the fin. aid it was super expensive, however, it was truly the best decision I've ever made.)

hope this helps! :)

Hey!

I have been in college for 3 years now and I have to deal with all this financial aid stuff with my self and my residents. (I am an RA at Ferris.) I would definitely listen to your mother. Colleges have a ton of money that they don't tell you about. If you tell them and show them the amount Alma is willing to offer you and explain why you want to go to school there, they might offer you more money.

Another thing too is weigh out the benefits of both colleges and see how accommodating Alma is compared to Oakland. Such as programs that each school has to offer, the location of the school, the housing and meal plan options, the types of student organizations that they have.

Either way you are going to make amazing friends, have amazing opportunities and create lifelong memories at either school.

Just try and see if Oakland can give you more money and if not then you just are going to have to make a choice based on what you feel is going to be the best option for you!

My college did up my award to match other offers. As a matter of fact they did out twice. I had to submit my official offer letter to the financial aid office and thary did it nearly automatically. Try it the worst they can say is no.

In terms of the scholarship issue I would take it to the other school that you like, and see if they will equal the amount. If not, and your decision comes down to being purely financial you should obviously go for the school giving you the money. That being said I would try to avoid making a decision on the financial alone. This is probably something that you will hear from a bunch of people, especially Harlan as he is one of the people who instilled this into me, that you should go where you think you will be happiest, this is the advice that I followed, and I haven't regretted it for a second!

Good Luck!

I live in Oakland County and have heard nothing special about OU.... I have heard really bad things about both their writing and math classes. I know that doesn't answer your question sorry. I would give the scholarship thing a try though. I will tell you, a small school cares about you being there and generally the professor-student relationships are better. A bigger school like OU dosn't care if you go there unless you play on one of their sports teams. But if a small school feel isn't your thing, go to the school that will make you happy no matter the cost! Good luck :)
