Math love is divided by shy girl's insecurities

Dear Harlan:I'm the girl who is always shy. Today, I met a cute boy in the math-tutoring center. He noticed me, and I noticed him too, but we did not talk at all. I feel like he is the one. I should have talked to him, but I couldn't say anything because of nervousness. I'm so sorry about myself. I've been thinking about him every moment after I passed by him. When can I meet him again? What can I say if I meet him again in the future?- Math CrushDear Math Crush:Don't say anything. You're not…See More

Once a cheater, not always a cheater

Dear Harlan:I used to cheat on a boyfriend I had from high school to freshman year of college. I ended it. I'm now in an amazing relationship and couldn't even imagine cheating on my boyfriend. Do you believe in "once a cheater, always a cheater"? My mom always says that.- Once a CheaterDear Once a Cheater:Unless you're cheating while writing to me, I don't believe you'll always be a cheater. You used to be a cheater. Music-therapy major clears the air: music majors aren't all struggling artists

Dear Harlan:I am a longtime reader of your column but have never felt the need to write in until I read the letter from “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” -- the student fighting his premed-focused parents in order to be a music major. As a Music Therapy major, one of my biggest pet peeves is encountering people who equate “music major” with “struggling musician driving a broken-down VW van whom no one wants to hire.” Nothing could be further from the truth. There are countless jobs that you can…See More

When you can’t read context or text, just have a talkie

Dear Harlan:I'm currently talking to a guy whom I'm really interested in dating. When we were introduced to each other, we really hit it off, and a connection was made. We have been texting since then, but I don't feel so sure about this connection. I just now want to know what direction this is going - is it headed toward friendship or an actual relationship? How do I ask him without scaring him away?- UnsureDear Unsure:Have a "talkie." A talkie is an old-time conversation people used to have…See More

Freshman in college struggles to see that she's a success

Dear Harlan:I’m from Colorado, and all through high school, I promised myself that I was going to go to college out of state. Last year, I attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and I hated it! I hated being away from home, I was constantly homesick and just disliked the California lifestyle. So, I decided to take a shot at another location, and applied for school in New York City, a place I have wanted to go my entire life. Well, I got in! Now I am here, attending classes,…See More

Text, run and hide is not the way to tell someone you like them

Dear Harlan:There's a guy I would like to get to know better. It's not my nature to approach men, but I've considered telling him how I feel via text. I don't see him on a regular basis, but I do have his number. Is it acceptable to text a man to let him know about my feelings? I'm just not sure.- TextingDear Texting:Texting your feelings is the equivalent of shouting "I like you!" and then running like hell because you're too afraid to wait around to see his reaction. Incoming college freshman's friendship blossoms over the summer in to something more

Dear Harlan:I met someone at college orientation this summer. I went up to her and said hi, exchanged names and then we both had to run. Once I got home, we started talking on Facebook every day, then texting every day, then finally talking on the phone for long periods of time. We arrived on campus this week and finally hung out. The conversation came up about where we stood, I told her, “Right now, I feel like this could become whatever we want it to be. We should definitely take time to get…See More

Don't let the price tag of college scare you away

Dear Harlan:I am senior in high school with a great list of accomplishments under my belt, and I am proud of my academic hard work. My teachers and peers tell me I have tons of choices at my disposal for college, but I don’t feel that way. My mother has told me she will contribute nothing for college, and I am stressed to the max. When I was younger, college loomed ahead as an exciting opportunity. Secret college love pact doesn't turn out as planned

Dear Harlan:So, I met this girl my sophomore year of college. We have been best friends ever since. The same year we met, we both came clean and told each other how we really felt. We even made a promise to each other that if we were ever single, we would get together, but after she and her boyfriend broke up, she called my best friend to come be with her. They have been together for almost a year now, and I still have the same feelings for her, and I am pretty sure she has them for me. What do…See More

Weed-smoking roommate risks getting sober roommate in trouble

Posted on April 17, 2014 at 9:00am 0 Comments

Dear Harlan:

My roommate smokes weed. She started over winter break. I came home the other night and my room smelled like weed! I told her from the start I don't care what she does as long as it's not near me or the dorm. She knows that I don't smoke, so I thought we had an understanding – until last night. I was really curious and I…

Dear Harlan:

I'm a 19-year-old woman living in a small Michigan town. I will be a junior in college this fall. I met this nice guy at the library where I work. We talked awhile, and I sensed this great chemistry, so I gave him my number. We hung out once, and I discovered he is 27 years old. I had no idea. He looks a lot younger and he also thought I was older.

He gave me the option of contacting him again, and I did. I asked him to see a movie with me, but he…

I am a teacher at a school for students with learning disabilities and teach our college strategies class. I have been reading your book and the workbook and have just purchased enough books to use it as our curriculum for this semester! Many students are shocked when they find out what college can really be like and my students have the added pressure of dealing with academic and social issues that go along with their disabilities.  I am looking forward to using this book to help them!

I think I have gifted a copy of your book to every college bound friend and their parent. Even helped my mom calm down a little.

That's me on a great day haha! By the way, what I have read of the book is great! I will be a peer leader/student teacher for freshmen in the fall. I wish I had a book like this when I started.

Actually my daughter works at EStreet Denim in Highland Park and met you and your wife and child about 4 years ago. She is now 23 but started her college career at NYU in jazz performance(flute), transfered to Middlebury and is now graduating in Art History. Like many her age, however, she is continuing her education in LA at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She realized, after traveling for 5 weeks in India with 3 professors that life in academia was not for her. Is your wife in private practice?
